Rooted in Durham: Meet Chef Amy Tornquist of Watts Grocery

Born just about a block away from Watts Grocery in Durham, North Carolina, Executive Chef and Owner Amy Tornquist cannot imagine working anywhere else. She loves Durham because of the city’s varied culinary culture as well as the arts scene. Named after the old Watts St. Grocery that she frequented as a child, Watts Grocery is Chef Amy’s restaurant as well as playground where she serves dishes inspired by her childhood and her home state of North Carolina.

Chef Amy focuses on incorporating ingredients sourced from North Carolina at Watts Grocery. In fact, the tagline at her restaurant is, “Local ingredients by the forkful.” Her menu is filled with Southern classics, each with their own unique twist and changing seasonally. On the new spring menu you’ll find items like pecan crusted catfish, a warm grilled asparagus salad, house macaroni and cheese gratin, and more.

Chef Amy will be bringing her Durham roots and local flare to our Taste for a Cure Chef’s Gala. We are excited to present Chef Amy’s delicious food along with many other amazing Durham chefs on April 30, 2017. Please join us for an evening of fun!
