John May most recently served as the executive chef at Piedmont, a Durham restaurant rooted in Southern tradition and woven in its North Carolina surroundings.
A Durham native, John returned home to join the Piedmont team in August 2016, following two-and-a-half years cooking alongside Chef Vivian Howard at her award-winning restaurant, Chef & The Farmer, in Kinston. During his time at Chef & The Farmer, John was featured prominently on several episodes of “A Chef’s Life,” a popular PBS television series. Prior to this experience, John served as a United States Marine and studied at The Art Institute in Durham before beginning his culinary journey by cooking at The Weathervane at Southern Season and The Boot. In 2017, John was named one of nine “Southern Chefs to Watch” by Zagat.
John’s style is described as vegetable forward and locally sourced. His distinctive menu creations at Piedmont highlighted micro-seasonality and the current harvest from sister farm, Coon Rock Farm, in neighboring Hillsborough.
