Farm Fresh: Meet Cheesemaker Kathryn Spann

Kathryn Spann and her partner, Dave Krabbe, own Prodigal Farm, a farmstead goat dairy located in a corner of her native Durham County, where her family has farmed for hundreds of years.

They make a wide array of national award-winning aged goat and cow milk cheeses, using goat milk from their own all-pastured herd, and cow milk from the grassfed Jerseys at nearby Reverence Farms. This results in cheeses of true terroir and exceptional creaminess. Both farms are certified Animal Welfare Approved, the most stringent human certification.

Prodigal Farm, which has been preserved through a conservation easement, is the embodiment of Kathryn’s multifaceted efforts to conserve and build the farming community and farmland base throughout their region.

Kathryn serves on the national board of directors of the American Cheese Society and on other boards in North Carolina.
