Joanne P. McCallie
The ACC Coach of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013, head coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her tenth season at the helm of the Blue Devils’ program.
In just ten years, Coach P has guided the program to a 245-65 overall record, a 108-30 mark in ACC action and eight NCAA Tournament selections, including a No. 1 seed in 2009 and four straight Elite Eight appearances from 2010-13. She led Duke to four consecutive ACC regular season titles in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and three ACC Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Her 82.0 winning percentage in ACC contests ranks first on the conference’s all-time coaching charts. Meanwhile, Coach P’s winning percentage of 80.9 in all games is first among active coaches in the ACC.
Coach P created the “Choice Not Chance” kids club whose philosophy focuses on making the correct choices in life. The philosophy is widely used by McCallie, her staff and players, who are very active in the community speaking about “CNC.” In its inaugural year the program received memberships of over 100 children who are entering the eighth grade or under.
In addition to guiding the program to a 245-65 overall record, Coach P. acts as spokeswoman for Duke Women’s Health Associates, advocating for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer — something she herself dealt with when she was treated at Duke for melanoma in 2007, 2016 and 2016. She aims to use her voice to raise awareness for early detection of melanoma and education for youth. She was the 2016 keynote speaker for the Taste for a Cure Chef’s Gala, an event which raised thousands of dollars to benefit melanoma research and awareness.
